Meeting Notes from May 23, 2019

Past President John Abernethy presided over the meeting as President Dave Boldt was out of town.  Andrew Vierra led the song, "My Country Tis of Thee".  Bob Mange gave the invocation.

Jim Padgett introduced guests.

Past President John announced that Anusha Subramanian, a graduating senior at Folsom High School, received the  $6,000, four year scholarship from the club.

Bob Flautt said that he has 56 sign-ups for the Fireworks Booth including 22 Rotary Annes.  He passed around the sign-up sheet at the meeting as there are still many open shifts.  The booth will be at the Raley's Shopping Center at Blue Ravine and Natoma.  It is a very lucrative site and Bob expects $60K in gross revenue.  It you did not sign-up at the meeting and can work at the booth, contact Bob at rflautt@comcast.net or 916-622-3960.

Christie Ross talked about the Wine and Dine.  If you have not provided a gift for the silent auction, $50 will be added to your June invoice.

Michele Raithel assessed fines.

Andrew Vierra introduced our speaker, Joe Mosko.  The title of his talk was "Vietnam War Secret Project".  Joe's talk was considerably more than his topic as he was a refugee from World War II.  He talked about his experiences escaping from the Germans and making his way to the United States, getting an education, and becoming an engineer at China Lake where he worked on guided missiles.  Andrew, thanks for inviting a very inspirational and interesting speaker.

Joe received a box of Snook's Chocolate from Past President John as a thank you for his talk.

District 5180 "One Day Conference"

On Saturday, May 18, the Rotary District 5180 Conference was held at the Citrus Heights Community Center.  This year's conference was very different from previous years as it was one day local instead of three days at a hotel out of the Sacramento area.  Our club was well represented by members Bob Flautt, John Messner, Ken Stuart, Vicki Bencken, Monika Reyes, Patti Mutchler, Bob Mutchler, Frank Woods, and Jean Hatfield.  Frank's wife, Carolyn, also attended.

At the breakfast session, the Rotary Youth Exchange students were introduced.  In the following photo, our student, Lucia, is fourth from the left.

This year's Club Awards were broken into three levels.  Top clubs in each category received a Platinum Award.  Gold Award Winners had high points and Silver Award Winners had medium points.  The award categories were Membership, Public Image, Youth Service, Service Projects, Foundation, and Administration.  The Rotary Club of Folsom was recognized with Silver Awards in each category.

Unfortunately, I didn't get a photo of Bob is his "spiffy" Sargent-at-Arms vest but here are the rest of the Folsom Rotarians.

Frank Woods and John Messner in back; Carolyn Woods, Monika Reyes, Ken Stuart, and Vicki Bencken in front.  Frank, John, Monika, and Ken are wearing crazy sunglasses promoting the 2019/2020 District Conference "Escape to Rotaryville".  This conference will be October 25-27, 2019 at the Peppermill Resort in Reno.  For more information on the October Conference, go to Escape to Rotaryville on the District 5180 website.
