Meeting Notes from November 8, 2018

President Dave Boldt called the meeting to order by leading the Pledge of Allegiance.  Bob Quinlan led the club singing "God Bless America" and Bob Mange gave the Invocation.  When the meeting re-convened after dinner, Secretary Jim Padgett introduced guests and visiting Rotarians.

Rebecca Orlino received her permanent name badge and President Dave gave her the opportunity to tell us about herself.

President Dave announced that November is Men's Health Month.  Some of our members are participating in No-Shave November.  The goal of the No-Shave November campaign is to grow awareness by embracing our hair — something that many cancer patients lose.  He also pointed out that our club is in the November Inspire (District 5180 Newsletter) with an article entitled "Folsom Rotarians Get on Board with the Flying Samaritans".  If you haven't read this month's Inspire, here is a link to the article, Flying Samaritans, scroll down to page 5.

At the 2018 District 5180 Foundation Dinner, the Rotary Club of Folsom was recognized as follows:
  • Number 1 in Endowment Giving
  • Number 1 in Polio Plus Giving
  • Number 1 in Polio Plus Per Capita Giving
May and Elio Marsalla were recognized for their endowment contribution of over a million dollars.  John Messner was interviewed about May and Elio onstage by RI Director John Matthews.

Bob Quinlan talked about the Veterans Day Parade on Sunday, November 11.  Unfortunately, the parade was cancelled by the city due to unhealthy air caused by smoke from the fire in Butte County.

Brian Martell talked about Coats on a Float in the Veterans Day Parade.  The Martell O'Neal Real Estate Group was going to collect coat and blanket donations for local veterans on their float in the parade.  Although the parade was cancelled, you can still make donations by calling them at (916) 235-7045 to arrange a donation pick up or drop off.

Justin Raithel announced the community work project for the next two Saturdays.  On November 10, the club was to remove two boardwalks on the bike trail near Sibley and Glenn.  On November 17, the plan is to build new boardwalks.  One boardwalk was removed on Saturday and will be rebuilt on Saturday, November 17.  The other will be done at a later date.

Bill Hutto announced that the election for President for the 2020-2021 Rotary year will be at our next meeting, November 15.  Monika Reyes was nominated by the Past Presidents.  As of November 8, there were no other candidates.

Steve Miklos announced that the deposit of $500 per cabin must be in to him by November 18 in order to receive the 3 freebies that he has secured for the cruise to Alaska next September.  If you are even thinking of going, get the deposit to Steve by the 18th.  It is fully refundable up to 90 days before sailing.

Andrew Vierra introduced our speaker, Major General Bill Wade,  who served several years in the National Guard.  Major General Wade shared humorous stories of his many years of active service.

Bike Trail Project

On Saturday, November 10, 12 Folsom Rotarians removed a boardwalk on the Folsom Bike Trail.  Justin Raithel drove an excavator provided by Bob Blackwell and he was able to pick up sections of the boardwalk and put them in a dumpster.  This section of the trail will be rebuilt on Saturday, November 17.  Sometime in the future, a second boardwalk section of the trail will be replaced.  The second section is about three times in length.
