Meeting Notes from February 29, 2024

The meeting of February 29 was a Mystery Trip organized by Matt Sundermier.

Members and guests met at Matt's office at 5 pm for a bus ride to where we didn't know. After drinks in Matt's office, the bus left about 5:15 and headed east on Highway 50.

The bus turned in at Cameron Park and stopped at a restaurant called Moonraker. It was a great place for dinner which included mini tacos, chips, salsas, beer, and wine. For the vegetarians there was a veggie pizza and some other veggie thing. We were entertained by a guitarist. I highly recommend Moonraker as the food and beer were excellent. They have a huge outdoor area which will be great when the weather gets warmer and it stops raining.

After dinner, the bus continued going east and stopped at Red Hawk Resort and Casino. We had VIP tickets for the Apex Recreation Center which included bowling, racing, shooting pool, and gambling. We had 4 private bowling lanes and could get a $20 card to play the slots.

Of course there was a bar on the bus. Thanks go to Matt for a wonderful, fun evening.

The 29th Annual Dave West Partnerships for Tomorrow Leadership Conference

On Tuesday, February 27, 2024, 50 community business leaders met with 65 Folsom High School and Vista Del Lago High School juniors at the 29th Annual Dave West Partnerships for Tomorrow Youth Leadership Conference held at Lakeside Church. This conference unites high school students with business and community leaders representing the City of Folsom to discuss leadership skills and ethical choices in the work place, in schools, and in the local and global community.

Students and business leaders meeting during continental breakfast.

The format of the conference is similar to a business conference. The day started with registration and a continental breakfast.  At the first general session, Toby Magarian, Rotary Club of Folsom, welcomed business leaders and students. The flag salute followed led by a member of the Folsom High School Interact Club.  Toby gave instructions to participants and introduced the discussion group leaders.  In addition to Discussion Group Leaders from the business community, each group had a Facilitator-in-Training, Class of 2024.  Each discussion group consisted of 6 or 7 business leaders from the community and 8 or 9 students.

First group discussion session.

The first group discussion session was Elements of Business Etiquette and Traits of a Leader and the second session was Leadership Skills.  Session 1 focused on the importance of business etiquette for a successful impression when meeting new employers, business leaders, and new friends.  Traits of a good leader were also discussed.  Session 2 focused on the traits of a good leader and how to help people make sound business and ethical decisions.  Also discussed in the session was the Rotary 4-Way Test.  The students were asked to be prepared during lunch to introduce themselves and what they planned to do after high school.  Two or three students also had to be prepared to present what the students had learned .

The second general session had everyone back together for lunch and the group presentations.  Toby Magarian announced each team when it was their turn to present.

Student Presentation

After the presentations, the students participated in a Professional Networking Session.  The goal of this final session was for student leaders to have informal time to network and ask questions of professionals in an area of business or vocation that they may be interested in pursuing.  There were nine groups such as finance/accounting, medical, and technology.
