Meeting Notes from March 4, 2021

President Monika Reyes opened the March 4th ZOOM meeting at 7 pm.  This meeting was our annual Youth Speech Contest.

Guests included Assistant Governor Sherie Tobin, Susan Posner (Speech and Debate Teacher at Folsom High School), and the families of the speech contestants.  Kevin George, brother of one of the contestants, joined us from his university to hear his brother's speech.  Kevin was our speech contest winner in 2016 and came in third at the District Conference.

Bob Mange told us that the speech contest is based on the RI International President's theme.  The theme for 2020/2021 is "Rotary Opens Opportunities".  The theme for the speech was "How the Year 2020 Opened Opportunities for Us."  Bob reminded us of the rules for the speech contest, introduced the 3 finalists by number, and said they would be properly introduced after the speeches.

Between speeches, President Monika made announcements.  She thanked Rotarians for attending Rich Pepin's "Fort Building Project", unpacking the dictionaries and putting labels in each of them.  She also announced that 90 participants were on ZOOM for the 26th Annual Dave West Partnerships for Tomorrow Leadership Conference on March 1.  Thanks to all Rotarians and volunteers who made this a successful event.

After the speeches, each contestant introduced themselves, told us of their plans after graduation, and introduced their families.

The winner of the speech contest was Mariya Thomas, FHS Junior, who won $200 and will represent us at the Area Contest.  First runner-up was Alexa Demarce, FHS Senior, who won $100.  Second runner-up was Joel George, FHS Junior, who won $50.

Bob thanked the judges, timekeeper, and teller for helping with the speech contest.  Judges were Ken Stuart, Garry Parlier, and Vicki Bencken.  Dave Bolt was the teller and Jim Padgett was the timekeeper.
