Meeting Notes from September 9, 2021

Club members opened the meeting at approximately 7 pm by starting the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the song "My Country Tis of Thee".  Al Stehli gave the Invocation.

Secretary Jim Padgett introduced visiting Rotarians and Guests.  Visiting us were Rotarians Christopher Byrd and Kay Byrd from the Rotary Club of Hoa-Hin, Thailand.  They own a bicycle touring company in Thailand but due to business, Christopher is looking to find a job in the States for a while and Kay will go back to Thailand to run the tour business.  Chris traded banners with President Steve Brozosky.

President Steve gave a presentation on the various ways to donate to The Rotary Foundation.

President Steve gave an update on the Brian Shul event on November 27.

Steve Sprague levied fines.

President Steve introduced Tom Cicchini, District 5180 Polio Plus Chair and member of the Rotary Club of Point West.  District 5180 introduced a new Rotary Foundation Program, the Polio Plus Society.  To become a member of the Polio Plus Society, members need to pledge a donation of at least $100 per year to Polio Plus at The Rotary Foundation until polio is totally eradicated.  President Steve, Tom, and Club Rotary Foundation Chair Sue Barrett presented Society pins and Certificates to members of our club who joined the Polio Plus Society.

After the presentation, Tom gave us an overview of the current Polio Plus Program at The Rotary Foundation.  Here are a few items in his presentation that I found interesting.
  • He had slides on the similarities and differences between COVID-19 and Poliovirus and a slide on what we've learned from Polio.
  • Rotary International established a Task Force on COVID-19.
  • Rotary members have contributed more than $2.1 billion and countless volunteer hours since 1979 protecting nearly 3 billion children in 122 countries.
  • Africa became polio-free in 2020.
  • Two is the total number of cases of wild poliovirus that occurred in the world this year as of September 7, 2021 compared to 102 cases by the same date last year.
  • District 5180 goal for Polio Plus giving this Rotary year is $250,000 with activities all year to support the goal.
  • If all eradication efforts stopped today, within 10 years, polio could paralyze as many as 250,000 children each year and likely be back here in the United States.  Polio is Rotary's #1 priority....it should be ours too!
President Steve presented a Snook's chocolate Rotary Wheel to Tom.
